The Song In Me | Helping Children Make Music

Nat Brooke | Baby Mun

Tonight I had the pleasure of joining a great group of local Chicago men and women coming together to support a new Organization The Song In Me. The Song In Me provides collaborative opportunities for children with serious medical conditions and special needs to create and record original songs. When a friend of mine got in touch with me explaining the basis of this organization my heart was already so invested in the concept. Children and young people facing life-limiting diseases often have to approach these challenges with the strength of an adult, through music therapy and ultimately recording their own personal piece these children will have an outlet for all of the emotions that they are experiencing which can be a source of boundless encouragement for them and their families. The Song In Me is in its initial stages of growth and could use all of the connective love and support it can get in helping this idea grow further.

Hello loves, back to making music after a bit of time in the tropical sunshine. I cannot express to you how beautiful it was to exert my energy on sourcing mangoes for an entire day and read underneath an umbrella. That is what life is about, no? Next Saturday Joel & I will be playing an acoustic set @ the Second Saturday Circle. Please visit our Facebook page if you’d like more details. If you’re unable to join in there will be a recording of this event to follow.

Happy Spring chickadees, xx

February 15th, 2013, over twenty four local, visual, vocal and musical artists gathered together at the Hacienda to promote their artistic works through the art of storytelling. What has now become the annual Folk Nite was a wildly successful event. The turnout was expansive and sometimes uncomfortable as we actually ran out of space to house our guests. This is both a brilliant and crucial realization that this community is growing in the Northern Chicago suburbs. Living outside of a metropolitan city for some artists can be stifling as well as inspiring. Spaciousness in physical surroundings outside of a city environment can bring worlds of inspiration, however having less accessibility to venues in which artists can promote their work and network amongst other artists can become a challenging aspect of living in a more remote area. Folk Nite is a cumulation of artistic endeavors between entertaining our friends and their friends alike to the study of our fellow artists as well as building a community of people who both create and appreciate artistic works. It is a welcoming environment for people to gather, build and share together. If you are interested in becoming a part of future Folk Nites or if you have a venue in mind that would be a accessible gem for such a gathering in the Northern Chicago suburbs you can get in touch with us at as well as visiting Folk Nites Facebook Page or The Hacienda Facebook Page.

New Year New Music

Nat Brooke, Joel Brown, Ian Simkins NYE 2012/2013

Happy New Year’s to you and yours. The past year in retrospect can be sensitively archived out of memory without much resurrection other than to say that we spent 2012 listening, playing and enjoying other musicians music all year. We worked, we danced and I wrote letters daily through the course of the year. I found secret beaches and brewed endless amounts of tea. We hauled a lot of equipment up seemingly endless stairs and J. found his best friend in his warm Woolrich shirt. It was only most fitting that we spend New Year’s Eve dancing and playing music all night along side a lineup of other local musicians at The Hacienda. We brought in 2013 by listening to one another intently on NYE with warm hearts and awoke in the New Year feeling inspired. Not to mention it was one of the most insane parties I’ve ever had the pleasure to play. Thank you to all of the musicians who participated and The Hacienda team for setting up the year to be satisfyingly full of art and friends. If you’d like to listen to some of the artists in the lineup take a look through the links below.
